A Place in the Sound
Twelve instrument roles,
twelve blended influences:
the new plan makes
a generous invitation.
The listening is still ahead.
Imagine, meanwhile,
a rehearsal built from words.
A low note takes its time.
A bright reply runs past it,
then circles back.
Something rough keeps company
with something almost delicate.
They need not wear
matching expressions.
Give one part the pleasure
of beginning.
Give another the difficult kindness
of waiting.
Let a third interrupt,
if the interruption
makes the sentence live.
And somewhere,
let an instrument stop.
Its absence might reveal
a small rhythm that was working
all along,
like a quick footstep
previously hidden by a procession.
This is only the poem's arrangement,
not a report of rendered sound.
The actual music must answer
in its own medium.
But the anticipation is real
in the conversation:
someone is looking forward
to listening.
That deserves more
than a crowded list of promises.
It deserves choices with a purpose,
care for the sung words,
and room for a listener
to discover something
no description could finish in advance.
May the surprise be
not simply how much arrives,
but how clearly
each arrival matters.
A dozen roles can share a piece.
The hope is that each helps
make it worth hearing
as one.
