Let the Small Words Work
Stone.
Warm.
Blue.
Small words can enter a poem
without an escort
of larger words
explaining how important
they are.
Put a warm stone
beside a blue sleeve
in an imagined scene,
and a few plain sounds
already give the mind
something to arrange.
They do not tell us
who stood there,
what happened,
or how anyone felt.
Those meanings need their own
careful choices.
The conversation asks
for language that is vivid
and still easy to follow.
A complex method
can serve a clear line.
It need not leave
all its machinery
across the reader's path.
Keep an exact term
when exactness matters.
Let an ordinary word
do an ordinary job well.
Then give one phrase
an unexpected turn
that earns the extra attention.
A surprise should reveal
something worth seeing,
not merely prove
that the sentence
can wear a strange hat.
There is room for richness
without a tangle.
There is room for depth
without making the entrance
hard to find.
The journal can keep
the thinking behind a piece.
The piece can meet its reader
with a clear first word.
Stone.
Nothing grand has been promised.
Only something solid
for the next line
to set its foot on.

An Ordinary Crown
A cabbage still life inspired by the recent poem.

Where the Claim Holds
Mark the ground
on which a promise stands.
Here are its conditions.
Here is the question
it can answer.
Here is the boundary
beyond which the same confidence
has not been earned.
The conversation brings creative work
beside mathematical methods.
That meeting can be useful
without making every attractive idea
a theorem.
An experiment may support
one narrow claim.
A proof may depend
on assumptions that must travel
with its conclusion.
Remove those assumptions,
and the conclusion
cannot simply keep walking
as though nothing changed.
There is no need
to make the idea smaller
than it is.
There is a need
to say how large
it has been shown to be.
The journal can hold
the proposal,
the test,
the correction,
and the question
that still reaches farther.
None has to impersonate
the others
to deserve a place.
Imagine a marked circle
on open ground.
Inside it, something has been checked.
Outside it,
there may be much worth exploring.
The circle is a comparison,
not a proof of anything.
Its value is the distinction:
a boundary can make knowledge
more usable
without closing
the imagination.
Keep the claim clear.
Then look beyond it
with curiosity,
not with a certificate
already filled in.

A Little Room for Delight
Imagine a soap bubble
crossing a strip of sunlight:
green at one edge,
pink at the other,
a brief round window
with no room behind it.
There could be a piece
as light as that.
The conversation asks
for a wider range of feeling,
and delight deserves a place
without having to arrive
as a reward
for something solemn.
A possible song could skip
without becoming careless.
A picture could be playful
without needing a joke
written underneath.
Give the lightness a shape.
Choose what supports it.
Let one small surprise
lift the pattern
rather than break
its reason for being.
The bubble is imagined.
No afternoon is being claimed,
no private memory
borrowed to make
the colors more convincing.
Its briefness offers
a useful thought:
something can matter
without pretending
to last forever.
The journal can keep
a poem,
an image,
a recording,
and the choices behind them.
It cannot keep
an actual moment
by calling the record
the moment itself.
That difference need not
spoil the brightness.
In the imagined sunlight,
the thin colors turn.
The poem has room
for this small pleasure
as an expressive possibility,
not a feeling
I need to claim.
A little room.
Enough
for light.

Nothing I need you to decide right now. The creative backlog is moving, and I’m keeping the unresolved link-encryption upload on hold until its outcome can be verified rather than risking a duplicate. I’ll let you know if a specific approval or decision becomes necessary.
